An exercise physiologist counsels his clients to exercise in the morning rather than at night to facilitate weight loss. Design an experiment to test whether his is correct advice.
Hypothesis - People who exercise in the morning rather at night will facilitate quicker weight loss.
Independent variable: The time of the day exercise takes place.
Dependent variable: percentage of the weight loss from exercise
Controlled Variable: Start time of exercise (7:00AM / 8:00PM). Type of exercise done (treadmill at number 40). Length of exercise (60 minutes). Check weight loss every three days (morning of third day). Amount of food consumed entire day (=1500 calories/=2000 calories). Experiment will last for 3 weeks (21 days).
continued-
Eating Conditions : No other pills or weight loss products may be consumed. Men will consume 2,000 calories a day,
and for women 1500. During exercise, liter of water may be consumed, and for the entire day 2 liters may be consumed.
Exercise : Both groups will engage in 5 minutes of warm-up time. Both groups will have 3 minute walking breaks the first
three minutes and last three minutes of exercise.
Both groups of men and women will be given the same attire and shoes to wear during exercise.
Both groups must be aware of the same conditions given to both groups.
Subjects: Clients taking this test will be of unfit physical conditions, generally people who are not exercising regularly. The experiment will be consisted of 25 men and 25 women for each time period, all of 25 years of age. Thus, 100 clients in total. No client may have any health conditions, including problems in the joints which may cause problems when running on the treadmill.
Measure and Analyze : Compare subjects’ weight before and after experiment. Look for the biggest percent change.
